5 Most Inspiring Celebrity Couples
Let’s be honest, many of us go into relationships without a true guide of what a relationship should look like. Whether it be that your parents couldn’t make it a day without fighting or you grew up in a single-parent household, true love was simply vacant and therefore considered unreachable. And that’s okay. I’ve been there and I know what that feels like.
While growing up, there were no idyllic relationships in front of my face one hundred percent of the time. So, like many of you, I tended to gravitate towards celebrity relationships that simply were #goals.
There are simply too many that I can count, so I chose to tell you about the top five. See if you can find your favorite amongst this list.
Barack and Michele Obama
Throughout the eight years that the Obamas shared in the White House, Barack and Michele have shown us what a loving and happy relationship should look like. Their love story, however, goes way farther than Washington, D.C.
Meeting at the Chicago firm of Sidley Austin, 25-year-old Michelle Robinson was “tasked with showing the new guy, Barack Obama, around.” Because they both attended Harvard, the firm thought it best to put them together. Despite only knowing one another for a month, Barack found the courage to ask out Michelle. Unfortunately for him, Michelle had refused his request as she was his mentor, and had recently sworn off dating to focus on her career.
Eventually, Michelle threw caution to the wind, and the two went on their first date. Not two years later, the power couple that we have all come to know, got engaged on July 31, 1991. In Michelle’s book, Becoming, she recalls their engagement dinner. Here is a snippet:
“Eventually, our waiter came around holding a dessert plate, covered by a silver lid. He slid it in front of me and lifted the cover. I was almost too miffed to even look down, but when I did, I saw a dark velvet box where the chocolate cake was supposed to be. Inside was a diamond ring.”
Let’s just say, it was a dinner that they will never forget.
Since the day they said ‘I do,’ they have had each other’s back. From being sworn in as the first Black couple in charge of The White House to Michele thriving as an author and inspiration to young girls, they have proven to us that love can prevail.
As their love story did not begin at the White House, it also did not end. The two have inspired a film, Southside With You, a fictionalized version of their first date, have helped to create a Netflix documentary on Michele’s book and tour, and have now developed a Michelle Obama Podcast. I mean, if that’s not something to look up to, then I don’t know what is.
Jay Z and Beyonce
According to Glamour, “Beyonce and Jay-Z are about as close to American royalty as it gets.” Whether that is true or not, is up for debate.
The two met when Beyonce was 18, and started dating when she turned 19. This, of course, we do not find out until later, as their relationship was kept under wraps. However, that all changed when the two stepped on the red carpet together during the 2004 VMAs. Although the cat was out of the bag, there were still secrets that the two wanted to keep. One of which being their secret wedding on April 4, 2008.
Jay Z revealed to the Vibe that “he and his wife want to keep the personal details of their relationship out of the public eye,” and rightfully so. Some things you want to keep sacred to you and your partner. Although social media tries to prove us wrong about this all the time, not everyone needs to know what is going on every second of your life.
Despite the two having an uprising singing career, their talents do not stop there. Jay-Z alone, with his ownership of Roc Nation, his multiple investments in places like Barclay’s and other career ventures, is considered to be “the first hip-hop artist to be worth $1 billion.” Alongside Beyonce’s “fashion lines and 24 Grammys,” the Carters have simply made a name for themselves.
Like most artists, Beyonce and Jay-Z have used their fame to not only be an inspiration but to spark change as well. This reigns true not only with their charitable contributions over the years but also by getting their hands dirty and putting in the work. Some of their charitable ventures include The BeyGood Foundation, The Survivor Foundation, ShawnCarter Foundation, partnering with Goodwill, and offering services to the Phoenix House.
Even though Jay-Z and Beyonce have had their fair share of complications, from cheating scandals to the famous elevator incident, they have stuck together through it all. For this reason, The Carters are one of the couples that display the true definition of what love should look like.
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
Although Neil and David have known each other for over a decade, they weren’t always the couple we now know them to be. According to Insider, “at the time they met, Neil Patrick Harris was single with no expectations of meeting someone.” Simply put, Neil thought that he wasn’t going to meet anyone and he planned to spend the rest of his life alone. This, of course, was common for many people in the LGBTQ+ community at the time, since gay marriage was considered illegal in most states in the US in 2004.
While Neil was struggling with finding a relationship, David had issues with his own long-distance relationship. Neil and David were hanging out platonically at the time, but definitely shared some feelings for one another. The spark was ignited when they went on their first date, a week after David ended his prior relationship.
Immediately after, the two were inseparable. So much so, that when Harris landed the role of Barney in How I Met Your Mother, “the couple moved to Los Angeles together so he could shoot the show.” Even though they planned on moving to New York to raise a family, the sitcom ran for ten years, leaving them in L.A. until the show’s end.
An amazing thing about this couple is that they both proposed to one another at different times. The first time, David proposed in 2007, but Neil was not truly ready to say yes. Then, in 2008, Neil proposed and got a yes from David.
While waiting for their nuptials to take place, the couple welcomed fraternal twins into their family, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace. Their names, of course, had special meanings. Harris revealed to Out that the couple “named Gideon after an artist we collect, Gideon Rubin, and Harper after Harper Lee [the author].” That is just the cutest thing.
In 2011, the two announced their five year long engagement after “the Marriage Equality Bill was passed by the New York state senate in 2011,” but didn’t get married until September of 2014 in Italy. Even though it took a long time for the two to become official, they have never stopped loving each other or their beautiful family. They are simply meant to be.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, our favorite social media personalities, met on the set of Legend’s music video for Stereo in 2006, where Teigen played his love interest. Little did they know that they would become each other’s real love interest that same day. They spent the whole day together working on the music video, ending the night with In-N-Out burgers back at Legend’s hotel room. I don’t know about y’all, but that sounds like a great night.
According to Insider, “shortly after the two met, Legend went on tour to promote his most recent album, ‘Once Again’.” The two weren’t official as of yet, but they text and talked on the phone almost every day that year. Between Legend’s tour stops, they two spent time together and soon developed a spark. So they did what any one of us would have done, they acted upon it and started dating. Out of the blue, during one of his tours, John expresses to Chrissy that he is not ready for a relationship. Let’s just say, it was the worst half-hour of their life. They loved each other too much to be apart for any longer.
Before their trip to the Maldives, Chrissy had been upset with John because he had only gotten her a cookbook and a Crock-Pot as gifts for Christmas. Not to say that those aren’t great gifts, they just weren’t what she wanted or even expected. It was lackluster, but it was done on purpose. Because on that very trip, John proposed to Chrissy. Guess you can say she had to wait for Christmas to come on a silver serving platter.
The two got married at a courthouse in New York City and said their vows in Lake Como, Italy. Three years after their marriage, Teigen gave birth to their firstborn child Luna. And a year later, Miles Theodore made his arrival. I guess Chrissy was right when she predicted that she would be pregnant for the rest of her life.
Unfortunately, this past year, their recent pregnancy ended in an unexpected miscarriage. Through this loss, the family has grown stronger and hope to continue to grow their family in the future. Whether Teigen will live out her dream of adopting children as well, is a mystery. Despite their pain, they have lived every day trying to make the most out of life. From their funny videos to their never-ending love for one another, these two love birds are definitely ones to look up to.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
Before Meghan and Prince Harry became the couple that we know them to be today, Meghan had little to no knowledge about the prince or the royal family. Being that she was a lifestyle blog writer and actress, the two would have never had to cross paths until the blind date in 2016 that their close friend set up. All Meghan cared about at the time, was for her new date to be nice. Little did she know that he was a prince.
The two hit it off pretty quickly. In fact, after about two months of dating, Prince Harry had revealed to The Sunday Express, that he was “happier than he’s been for many years.” That happiness, unfortunately, was questioned the moment Harry released a statement confirming his relationship with Meghan. The local papers decided to speak out about the fact that Meghan was not only American, but that she was a Black American. Harry, of course, stood up for her through it all. With these issues early on, it is no surprise that the two decided to leave the royal family in the beginning of last year.
After a year of dating, the couple announced their engagement on November 27th, 2017 and within a few months were married at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. According to Insider, the newlyweds decided to “move slightly further afield from the royal family and settled at Frogmore House,” soon after finding out that they were pregnant with their baby boy, Archie.
Throughout the short time that they have been married, the two have been taking tours in places like, Australia, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, and a few countries in Africa. They definitely know how to have fun and maintain a reigning presence around the world.
So what’s next for the ex-royals? Harry and Meghan are expecting their second child soon, and have also planned to “produce documentaries, docuseries, feature films, scripted television shows, and children’s programming under their new business” deal with Netflix.
Since these two have been together, they have shown us time and time again, to stand by your partner no matter what happens.
Like I said before, there are definitely more celebrity couples that belong on this list, but these five have surely earned their spot at the top. They have all taught us something about relationships, that we can carry out into our own. You never know, one day you might be considered one of the most inspiring couples.
